Sprint Cup History
The Sprint Cup Series has a rich history dating back to 1949 when it first started. The Sprint Cup is the highest level of NASCAR racing in the world and only the best race car drivers will be found driving in this series. The Sprint Cup originated in 1949 when it was known as the Strictly Stock Series. Then from 1950-1970 it was known as the Grand National Series, and from 1971-2003 it was known as the Winston Cup Series. In 2004 to present the Sprint Cup is known as the Nextel Cup Series.
The reason for the change of name over the years is in large part due to a new sponsor who would like to change the name of the series. Currently the sponsor is Sprint Nextel which is why it’s called the Nextel Cup Series.
The roots of the Sprint Cup Series started mainly in the Southeastern United States where most of the race tracks were located. Initially the Sprint Cup only raced a little over a half dozen races every season, but over the years more race tracks were added across the country to make the sport more widespread across the United States.
Nowadays the Sprint Cup Series consists of a total of 36 pkr poker races spread out across the United States so that more fans of the sport could watch it live. I like that the series is much longer now because it allows the racers to have time to battle it out for the top positions over the season.
The past three years of the Sprint Cup Series has seen Jimmie Johnson walk away with the championship at the end of the season. Cale Yarborough is the only NASCAR race car driver who has won three Sprint Cup Championships. This year will allow Jimmie Johnson to set the record if he can manage to finish first place in the points again and win for the fourth year in a row.
Over the years the race car has seen a ton of changes as well and nowadays there are tons of modifications made to each race car. When the Sprint Cup Series first started you could only race with stock cars with no modifications made to your vehicle which limited the speed of the sport. Nowadays most fans thrive off of the speed and loud noises the cars make which is why the sport has gone in this direction.
The Sprint Cup has become the most televised racing sport across North America followed closely by PokerStar.net and can be seen all the time on many of the major broadcasters such as Fox, TnT, NBC, ABC and CBC.
